The platform of Robloxdedicated to video game design, has integrated a new model of Artificial intelligence quite innovative for the translation.
It is a system capable of translate chats in real time, capable of being so responsive that users may find it difficult to notice that a translation is actually happening. The new translator is able to work with 16 languages and it could represent an innovation that goes far beyond the simple videogame context.
Interviewed by The Vergethe CTO of Roblox, Dan Sturmanstated that this system was designed to make users feel at ease, allowing them to communicate with the entire community without particular constraints related to automatic language.
Once the message is translated in the chat, the user is still shown aspecific icon in order to “verify first-hand” the source of the proposed text.

According to Sturman “We know that engagement increases when users speak or interact with others in their own language“, then adding “We’ve taken this concept and removed the language barrier with machine translation“.
Roblox’s automatic translator uses a template LLM, powered by both data provided internally by the company and public sources. The Large Language Model was placed in an architecture MoE (Mixture of Experts), with sections dedicated to a specific language. In fact, we are not talking about different systems for each language, but about a platform capable of working on idioms, thus optimizing resources and performance.
The operation of the instrument is subjected to safety checks and appears to take high consideration user feedback. Sturman himself then predicted how “In the future, we could use Artificial Intelligence to translate non-compliant words (i.e. prohibited ed.) into compliant words or insert the translator into voice chats“.
Roblox is a platform much appreciated by gamers and, also for this reason, in the past it has also had to face some problems in the context of cybersecurity.
