The long-distance battle continues through Spotify and Apple. This time theEuropean Union should take the side of the streaming giant and force the Cupertino company to modify what is its own, criticized, in-app purchase policy.

Between Apple and Spotify it is the second to celebrate: the imminent ruling of the EU authorities

At a distance of approx four years from the complaint presented by Spotify to the EU antitrust, there could be an important turning point. The European Union authorities, according to Bloomberg, are preparing a ruling that would prohibit Apple from preventing music services – Spotify, Pandora, Amazon Music and so on – from offering alternative options (therefore different from the App Store) for subscribing.

The temporary solution chosen by Spotify for Don’t give Apple a percentage of each subscription via the iOS/iPadOS client is perhaps the most drastic one: it is simply not possible to subscribe to Premium via the app. In the future, however, things should change, at least according to the latest news.

For those who missed some chapters of this battle, the EU reached a preliminary decision in 2021 declaring that The App Store has unfairly favored Apple Music over competing music streaming services, like Spotify. Second Bloombergthe authorities would be giving “the finishing touches” to the final sentence, which – barring surprises – will be issued at the beginning of 2024.

The ruling will focus solely on the rules anti-steering of Apple relating to music streaming services, it is however possible that this will be triggered a series of more far-reaching changes. It is also possible that one will arrive too MORE equivalent to 10% of Apple’s annual sales in the EU.
