TikTok: UMG musicians return to the social network with protections against AI

The dispute between Universal Music Group e TikTok seems to have finally come to an end. The music label and the well-known social network, in fact, have signed an agreement in the last few hours.

Through the latter, UMG artists will officially return to the platform, both in terms of previously “silenced” content and in terms of the creation of new ones. UMG represents some of the best-known names on the world recording scene, with i Beatles, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish e The Weekndjust to name a few.

After the failed agreement at the beginning of February, the label had accused the social network of not wanting to compensate the artists fairly and of not intending to protect them fromArtificial intelligence. Precisely in this context, TikTok has declared that it wants to intervene in a concrete way, removing music generated through AI and favoring attribution to artists and songwriters.

TikTok, once the issue with UMG has been overcome, the great unknown of the possible ban in the USA remains

Despite this reconciliation between TikTok and musicians, the position of the social network remains very delicate in the American context.

In fact, last April 24th, the US president Joe Biden he signed a bill that could lead to a ban in the United States for the platform. This measure seems to want to push ByteDancethe company that owns the social network and is believed to be close to the Chinese government, to sell TikTok to an ownership deemed less dangerous for the American government.

In this context, the agreement signed with UMG takes second place, given that millions of users could soon be completely cut off from TikTok.

On the other hand, the relationship between musicians and AI remains a burning topic. After the letter signed by 200 artists asking for greater protection, Google Deep Mind seems to have taken a stand, with its AI model Lyrato be able to coexist two worlds that are apparently still very distant from each other.
