Use Voice Chat on WhatsApp in large groups

Let’s find out how to use group voice chat on WhatsApp which works like a live audio conference between multiple people

WhatsApp never ceases to amaze and introduces voice chats in groups, i.e. chats where we only use our voice to speak without having to write messages or send voice notes of several minutes. Voice chats leave the phone’s microphone active and work as if it were a call, but without using WhatsApp’s specific calling function.

Differently from voice messages, voice chat is a function only for groups, to facilitate communication between many people without the need to intervene one at a time, as if it were an audio conference, or a phone call, between several people together. There are some requirements to use Whatsapp voice chat, so there is a possibility that, until now, you have never seen the button to activate it.

1) Activate voice chat on WhatsApp

To activate WhatsApp voice chat, all we have to do is open a group chat that is large enough but not too large (the limits are listed in the next chapter) and press the button at the top right in the shape of waves (Function called precisely Voice chat).

Once the voice chat has started, all members of the group will see it appearat the top of the phone, a push notification to participate quickly to the voice chat started; no one is forced to participate in the voice chat, but you can always check which people are participating in the small banner at the bottom of the screen.

2) WhatsApp voice chat requirements

Strange to say, voice chat has limits that must be respected if you want to use the function correctly.

  • Number of participants in the group: the voice chat icon will only appear if they are present in the group at least 33 people; will disappear again if there are more than in the group 128 people. We therefore try to keep the group within certain limits if we want to test the function.
  • Main device: if we have exploited the WhatsApp multi device we can only start the function from the main device and not from one of the devices associated as secondary.
  • Closing voice chat: Voice chats close automatically when everyone has left the chat. They also end if no one joins after the first person, or within 60 minutes of the last person joining the chat.

If, however, we want to exit the voice chat, just press the X icon next to the started chat to be able to return to the traditional group chat.

Conclusions

The function It does not replace WhatsApp’s call and video call function, both still present on the mobile apps. This function is useful for young people and very young people who want to talk in a group without having to send a thousand voice notes, all to be read one in a row.

For all other older users or those already well accustomed to voice notes or calls from the app it’s just an additional function that we often don’t even noticegiven that it only appears in particularly large groups and what’s more disappears in enormously large groups, so it only applies if you have a small circle of friends or people you talk to on a daily basis.

Instead of voice notes, the voice chat opens and you speak, without leaving the screen that shows the group and leaving the possibility of also writing text messages for those who do not want or cannot participate in the voice chat.
