VMware is part of Broadcom: the reasons for the acquisition

Broadcom is an American multinational company engaged in the design, development and marketing of semiconductors, software solutions and connectivity services. The company offers a broad range of products and services, with a focus on semiconductors, networking solutions, storage devices and wireless products. The leaders of the company, which makes a large part of the chips present in the devices we use every day, today announced the acquisition of VMwarea company founded in 1998 and leader in the virtualization sector.

Hock Tan, president and CEO of Broadcom, explains that the acquisition of VMware represents a significant milestone. The goal, he notes, is to help businesses around the world address the complex challenges ofIT infrastructureenabling them to deploy private and hybrid cloud environments and adopt a “apps anywhere” (to run applications and services anywhere).

VMware Broadcom

VMware Cloud Foundation

To realize Broadcom’s vision, the company will pivot VMware Cloud Foundationlo stack which serves as the foundation for private and hybrid cloud services. VMware Cloud Foundation fits Broadcom’s vision of helping customers convert the infrastructure Enterprise IT, typically heterogeneous, in a virtualized and containerized environment.

Broadcom clients will thus be able to deploy IT services useful for achieving company objectives, minimizing security risks, obtaining better time to market and generating additional revenue. Emphasis will also be placed on modernization of cloud environments.

Networking and application security

Protect workloads from cyber threats constantly evolving, it is increasingly a priority. It’s not just about protecting the corporate perimeter, as threat actors move laterally and exploit internal systems to gain control of machines and infrastructure.

There is a need to develop multiple layers of defense against lateral attacks, from unauthorized access to malware to ransomware protection. There distributed security of VMware, combined with complete visibility, allows customers to implement effective strategies multi-level security e Zero Trust.

The same use of modern techniques based on the use ofartificial intelligence and generative models, allows you to combat the most advanced threats in the changing malware landscape.

Regarding the distribution of workloadsFurthermore, applications must be highly available and automatically adapt to workload more dynamic. Agility, autoscaling and integrated application visibility are key requirements for a modern solution load balancing.

Modern applications

VMware research highlights that over 70% of CIOs (Chief Information Officer) is focused on developing modern applications and cloud native. Companies are prioritizing applications based on artificial intelligence technologies, machine learning, Kubernetes, open source solutions and private and hybrid cloud ecosystems in order to achieve a competitive advantage. The process of distribution e application management on a large scale, i.e. involving a significant number of users, devices or environments, it has however become increasingly complex.

Broadcom says that VMware Tanzua platform designed to simplify and accelerate the process of developing, deploying and managing containerized applications in cloud, hybrid and multi-cloud environments (for example with Docker and Kubernetes), will allow you to streamline your work, both on VMware Cloud Foundation and on all the main hyperscaler.

Why Broadcom bought VMware

Broadcom’s acquisition of VMware represents one strategic move to further diversify and enhance their solution offerings, enabling them to enter the virtualization solutions market.

Broadcom can thus expand its portfolio to include the expertise of virtualization VMware and offer a broader range of IT solutions to its customers. The initiative represents a clear signal of what Broadcom intends to create in the future, increasingly optimized chips that will support the needs of businesses in terms of virtualization and containerization.

A company historically linked to hardware like Broadcom enters “forcefully” into the hardware sector software gaining advanced skills and technologies in virtualization.

According to Broadcom, however, the acquisition of VMware is certainly not a point of arrival. In fact, the company plans significant investments to increase the innovation and value available to VMware customers. Half of the investments will be focused on research and development, the other half will help accelerate the deployment of solutions through VMware and partner professional services.
