WhatsApp: the new year brings bad news for Android users

2024 will bring with it a lot of news regarding the tech world. However, not all of them will be positive. With the latest version of WhatsApp Betafor example, the backup on Google Drive is no longer unlimited. To put it in other words, it will occupy useful space in the popular Big G platform that all – or almost all – Google users use.

Not that this is a surprise, mind you. Already in November last year the Mountain View giant had announced that the backup of WhatsApp chats on Google Drive would no longer be unlimited within months. However, Android users were hoping to still have some time, and instead – while we are still toasting to the new year – the freezing shower has already arrived.

The WhatsApp team in November had not provided precise details on the timing of the change coming into force. One day “X” is actually not there, but it is known that gradually Android users will receive a notification 30 days before everything happens.

So, is it a matter of days, weeks or months? It is not possible to say for sure, but this is new already active in the beta channelit is likely that it will also arrive in the final version of WhatsApp no later than the first of 2024.

In practical terms, this change will result in a potential reduction in available space on Google Drive, which offers 15GB in the free version. In this regard, it is good to remember that cloud storage space is free it is shared between Drive, Gmail and Photos.

Given that WhatsApp backups are usually quite heavy, Android users who rely heavily on the three Big G services should start doing some cleaning to avoid taking up memory with files of little use and importance or to think on the possibility of increase storage space via subscription.
