Automatica company that owns platforms such as WordPress e Tumblrwould be in the process of selling the contents of these services to companies engaged in the context ofArtificial intelligence.
This is what emerges from an article published on the site 404media.co where, among other things, the name of MidJourney e OpenAI as potentially interesting companies to these huge databases to power their products.
Although the details of this agreement appear to be in their infancy, Automattic has already reassured its users, stating that users will still have control over their data and its fate. From what transpires, however, not everyone within the company itself would agree with the sale of the information.
This type of processing of user data is nothing new, given that the social network Reddit recently performed a very similar operation.

This particular technology needs to be “trained” and this involves an enormous amount of data. Although in many cases these systems move beyond the limits of copyright lawssome large companies are getting around these problems by purchasing entire databases from platforms that own them. Social network and similar services, in this sense, are fertile ground for such operations.
In this specific case, Automattic plans to introduce a new setting, starting on Wednesday, that will allow users to voluntarily choose to power AI systems. As pointed out by 404Media, however, it is not clear whether this will be active by default or not.
Precisely regarding the company’s intentions, a post appeared on the Automattic blog which reads as “Artificial intelligence is quickly transforming almost every aspect of our world, including how we create and consume content. At Automattic we have always believed in a free and open Web and individual choices. Like other companies in the industry, we are closely following these advances, including the idea of working with AI companies, always respecting the preferences of our users“.
