CEO Kevin Systrom confirmed the news, providing some more details in a post on Medium. «We have decided to end operations of the Artifact app. We launched it a year ago and have worked tirelessly since then to build a great product», we read in what is a sort of letter addressed to those who believed in the project.

«We’ve created something that appeals to a small group of users, and we’ve concluded that the market opportunity isn’t large enough to justify continued investment.». Then a comment on the future and the potential of artificial intelligence: «Personally, I’m excited to continue making new things […]. We live in an exciting time where artificial intelligence is changing virtually everything we touch and the opportunities for new ideas seem limitless».

Features in hand, Artifact really wasn’t an app like the others. Throughout 2023, the development team has added exciting new features, such as the ability to ask the AI ​​to summarize the articlesto add comments within the app and thus create a sort of community, to report clickbait articles and so on.

In addition to not having made its way into the hearts of users, another problem has also emerged over the months: the lack of staff to moderate and supervise activities on the app. Moreover, the team is made up of only 8 people, who – according to Systrom – will take different paths after the definitive closure of the service.
