Inside the FRITZ! Lab, which offers experimental versions of the firmware which anticipate many of the new features included in AVM routers in the future, we have found a preview of FRITZ!OS 8.0. This is a release that provides a “taste” of novelty which will be introduced, first of all, within devices such as the FRITZ!Box 7590AX and 7590.

New features spotted in FRITZ!OS 8.0

Among the most interesting new features of FRITZ!OS 8.0, we highlight auser interface largely redesigned: aims to significantly simplify device configuration operations.

Now you can directly edit the device names on the screen containing general network information (Overview), both for the home network and networks guest.

One of the main innovations of FRITZ!OS 8.0 lies in the introduction of support for the transport of IPv6 packets within tunnel VPN WireGuard. This is a particularly useful innovation for users who use Internet connections with IPv6 native.

To implement this feature, AVM appears to have adopted a solution based on the use of ULA addresses (Unique Local Addresses) for IPv6 address translation. In practice, a peer VPN could receive a private IPv6 address from the FRITZ!Box router, allowing communications with the rest of the IPv6 network via the AVM router.

Already with the advent of FRITZ!OS 7.90, support for five should arrive DECT telephone calls simultaneous, compared to the three previously allowed.

AVM has also announced further improvements in the WiFi, home automation and telephony sectors: they will debut in the next preview versions of the firmware, to then also be transferred to the stable versions intended for the entire user base.
