Google Phone App: stop searches on Google Maps

Google announced the imminent stop for the function Nearby places dell’app Telephone.

According to the official communication, the function would have been cut because only a limited number of users actively use it. According to the data held by the Mountain View company, in fact, the majority of people opt for searches on search engine or go directly to the app Google Maps.

At the time of its introduction, years ago, the function in question seemed to have its usefulness, given that it provided the advantages of a search on Maps over a search in the phone book, with the possibility of quickly locating business.

In fact, nearby places allowed, for example, to call a local pizzeria without the inconvenience of having to manually type the number, but by carrying out a text search.

Phone App and Nearby Places: why did Google make this drastic decision?

The Nearby Places feature appeared on the Pixel 2 and, together with other similar tools, it has helped create an ecosystem appreciated by users. In its small way, therefore, it contributed to the success of the smartphones produced by Google.

In reality, the cancellation may not just be related to low usage. In recent months, in fact, Luoghi vicini has shown that it is no longer reliable with several bug e malfunctions reported on Reddit. In this sense, it seems that Google actually stopped supporting it last summer.

According to other rumors, the decision would be influenced by the fact that searches through Nearby Places would take away traffic from Google Maps. This latest app shows advertisements which make money for Google (unlike the Telephone app) and, therefore, this cut could also make something in economic terms for the technological giant.

Beyond these discussions, the next Pixel products will no longer see this type of functionality integrated into the app used for calls.
