Is AI sending smartphone apps into retirement? Deutsche Telekom's bet

With one smartphone many things can be done, also and above all thanks to the many applications that digital stores make available. The versatility of these devices is beyond question, for example with just a few taps you can scan documents but also book trips, take measurements and create professional-level content. But is it possible that we can’t do even better?

The concept of smartphones could change forever: for Deutsche Telekom, AI can make digital life easier

An unusual player, that is, tries to move the market Deutsche Telekom. Al Mobile World Congress 2024 in Barcelona (which kicks off Monday, Feb. 26), the company will unveil one smartphone AI created in collaboration with Qualcomm and Brain.ai. Artificial intelligence, we read in the recently released press release, will go to replace the many applications which are used by millions of users every day.

The generative interface based on Brain.ai, which will come, will manage everything generated contextually. You can interact with the latter via voice and text commands and you will be able to carry out daily activities without having to rely on many (too many?) applications.

«We will use AI and LLMs to improve and simplify the lives of our customers», he declares Jon Abrahamson, Chief Product and Digital Officer at Deutsche Telekom. «Our vision is that of a concierge for a smartphone without apps. A real daily companion that meets consumer needs and simplifies digital life».

At the tech fair in Barcelona, the new AI that will try to retire apps will be shown in action on Telekom’s T Phone using theartificial intelligence in the cloud. For processing directly on the device, we will instead have to wait for a new smartphone with a top-of-the-range Snapdragon Gen 3 processor.

Artificial intelligence is now a constant and is changing both some ways of approaching certain professions and the ways in which many software and hardware are used. The question therefore arises as to whether Deutsche Telekom’s AI Concierge is a novelty destined to change the concept of smartphones forever or whether it is, more simply, an alternative to be taken into consideration only in certain cases.
