Legal trouble for X due to music rights: what’s happening?

Legal trouble for X due to music rights: what's happening?

Yesterday, the district judge Aleta A. Trauger partially denied the motion of X which required the dismissal of a lawsuit brought by some music labels over the past year.

A few months ago, in fact, the National Music Publishers’ Association (NMPA) sued the social network for $250 million. Apparently, other important names in the musical context also joined the cause, such as Universal Music Group, Concord Music Group, Sony Music Publishing e Warner Chappell Music.

According to the judge, it is not yet clear to what extent X actually has responsibility for some potential copyright violations that occurred on the platform but, in fact, the case is destined to continue.

The lawsuit over music rights continues: here’s what the judge will have to decide

According to the lawyers supporting the lawsuit, X would have generated numerous copyright violations, resulting in damages for those who create music. This would be due to the lack of an adequate system to counteract posts offering music protected by copyright. Even before the acquisition by Elon MuskX has had to deal with such allegations, with the first cases reported as early as late 2021.

Apparently, everything will be played out on some “nuances”, with the judge who will be busy identifying the almost invisible border between competition in violation e direct responsibility of the social network. The platform, known for leaving considerable freedom to its members, therefore finds itself in a very delicate situation.

Of course, this lawsuit over music rights is certainly not the first (or even the last) involving X and its owner Elon Musk. Recently, in fact, the entrepreneur of South African origins reported OpenAI e Sam Altmanaccused of having moved away from the original open approach.
