Microsoft titan of the cloud: record numbers in 2022

Analyst firm IDC has provided the public with a very interesting new survey regarding the cloud market internationally. According to the latest estimates, Microsoft continues to be successful in the segment confirming himself as the titan to defeat. Let’s look at the data for 2022, trying to understand if other giants like Amazon Web Services will be able to surpass Satya Nadella and associates.

Microsoft remains the king of the cloud

The IDC numbers speak for themselves: at the end of 2022, the Redmond giant held the 16.8% of the market share, closely followed by Amazon Web Services in second place with a 13.5% share. In the Top 5 Salesforce Inc, Google and Oracle appear in order; the top five companies account for 41% of the market share in 2022 and, overall, are grew by 27.3% YoY (year-on-year). Surprisingly, this is more than the annual growth of the market as a whole, which is 22.9%.

Microsoft Patch Day June 2023: Critical Vulnerabilities

Rick Villars, group vice president of Worldwide Research at IDC, said the containment of new expenses and optimizing existing cloud resources are new business priorities. Ergo, in 2023 the percentages could decrease and will also depend on the success of companies in evaluating and using artificial intelligence.

In particular, generative AI “is starting to dominate enterprise long-term investment planning and programs, and cloud service providers will play a significant role in evaluating and adopting AI enablement services”.

Microsoft is inevitably at the forefrontgiven the substantial investments in OpenAI – of which it is officially the first partner company -, but also pay attention to Google and Amazon Web Services (which has invested 100 million dollars in generative AI), as they could surprise everyone during 2023 and in the years to come.
