OpenAI and University of Arizona agreement: ChatGPT arrives in the classroom

L’Arizona State University (ASU) e OpenAI have announced a partnership to bring ChatGPT in the classrooms of the institute.

The announcement, released via press release, saw ASU explain how it plans to “Improve student success, create new avenues for innovative research, and streamline organizational progress“. Apart from some students who use ChatGPT in a way that is not exactly legal, this initiative demonstrates how chatbots can be fruitfully integrated into training.

To achieve the aforementioned goals, the university will begin collecting proposals and projects from both teachers and students from February. The potential applications, in this sense, can be multiple. The most probable is, without a shadow of a doubt, the use of ChatGPT as personalized tutors during the course of study.

Kyle Bowen deputy chief information officer at ASU, stated how “Our faculty and staff were already using ChatGPT, and after the launch of ChatGPT Enterprise, which for us solved many of the security issues we had“. Right from the first contact, the idea of contacting OpenAI directly for a joint project was born.

ASU and OpenAI: the future of universities under the banner of Artificial Intelligence

On the other hand, ASU faculty members in many cases already have a fair amount of experience in using AI, providing a solid basis for developing a system that can also be adapted to other university contexts in the future.

Last year, ASU launched a specific program with focus on AI, bringing together researchers and engineers to create services based on this technology. The university also began offering engineering courses that deal with AI to promote literacy in this very new subject.

This is the first partnership between OpenAI and an educational institution, but certainly not the first with institutions. In the past few days, in fact, an agreement was announced with the government of the state of Pennsylvania to bring ChatGPT Enterprise to government employee computers. At the same time, OpenAI also began to establish collaboration with the Pentagon.
