OpenAI API, what changes with the new charging methods

The most famous OpenAI product on a global scale is without a doubt ChatGPT. However, developers who take advantage of the benefits deriving from the use of generative models every day often leverage the characteristics of OpenAI API. These are, as the name suggests, simplified programming interfaces that allow you to integrate tools artificial intelligence in their applications, without necessarily having specialized skills in AI and machine learning.

What are the OpenAI APIs and what are they for?

The OpenAI API can be used to generate text automaticallyfor example to write product descriptions, generate content for social media or create personalized responses to be passed on to corporate chatbots.

Other APIs, always integrated into the “package” provided by Sam Altman’s company, can be used to translate the text from one language to another, for text analysis (for example to classify user comments, detect opinions or extract relevant information), to create advanced mechanisms capable of processing complex questions. A scheme particularly suitable for the creation of assistance applications customer and technical support.

However, the OpenAI Developer Platform page highlights how the programmer can achieve multi-channel AI applications combining the processing of texts with that of images and voice messages, also being able to benefit from mechanisms of computer vision.

In September 2023, OpenAI said that ChatGPT has become able to see, read and listen: the new challenge in the field of AI, in fact, is precisely that of combine skills moreover models specialized to arrive at a single solution, capable of managing even broader and more multifaceted application fields.

OpenAI API: their use must be prepaid

Until yesterday, developers interested in using OpenAI’s APIs received a statement of the expenses to be incurred at the end of the month. The company led by Sam Altman does not deviate from a “pay as you go” approach but from now on he asks that users purchase credits in advance which they will use later.

Confirmation came with an official email sent to users of the service. The communication clarifies the new “rules of the game” explaining that it is possible to purchase credits by referring to your account and then clicking on Settings, Billing in the left column.

The innovation introduced by OpenAI in the management of payments concerns exclusively the use of the API and the Playground. OpenAI Playground is an online platform that allows users to explore models and do experiments. The platform offers an interactive interface that allows users to load, train and test AI models in different contexts, such as image recognition or natural language.

Reading between the lines, one perceives OpenAI’s desire to no longer be paid following the provision of the most advanced services. The costs that the company faces on a daily basis to keep the entire infrastructure up and running are colossal: for this reason, evidently, it prefers advance payment.

Who has purchased a subscription plan to ChatGPT Pluswhich allows the use of more advanced generative models (GPT), offers faster responses, access to plugins and new features, is however in no way affected by the change just described by OpenAI.
