Parental controls on TikTok: how to set time, limits and controls

Don’t we want our kids to use TikTok too much? Let’s see how to put parental control in the app or phone

TikTok parental controls

TikTok is without a doubt the most used app by young and very young people and, as such, should be subjected to parental control. The app offers numerous tools to implement a Effective and difficult to remove parental controls (unless you want to use a different phone and account each time), which complement the parental control tools already present on modern phones.

In the following guide we will show you how to put parental controls on TikTok from the app itself and how to configure parental controls on iPhone and Android, so as to prevent massive use of the app when children have to study or sleep.

1) Set Limited Mode

To use TikTok’s limited mode we open the app, press down on the menu Profilepress at the top right on the three lines, then up Settings and privacy and let’s finally get to the menu Content preferences.

In the new window we press on Limited mode, enter a personal access code and activate the function for the account in use; even using the account from another phone or PC, the mode will always be active until deactivated by the parent.

2) Set Family Link

The true parental control of TikTok can be reached by opening the app and taking us along the path Profile -> Menu -> Settings & Privacy -> Family Link.

A window will open where you can press on Continues; in the new window we set up a TikTok account to use as Parent and let’s connect it to the account Adolescent (i.e. the one in use on the phone to be blocked or monitored).

From now on, all we need to do is open the TikTok app on our parents’ phone and take us back in Family connectionso that we can remotely manage all the limitations to be imposed on our child’s account: we can choose whether our child should have a public or private account, control the use of the app (i.e. the daily usage time), silence push notifications at specific timesfilter keywords or hashtags, enable search or not and by setting a usage filter (from 1 hour by default).

Among other options, you can adjust direct messages, whether or not to view liked videos and whether or not to enable comments.

3) Set usage time

The option is also present on TikTok Usage timereally very useful to avoid becoming totally dependent on the app, also putting a brake on minors.

To proceed, let’s take the path Profile -> Menu -> Settings and privacy -> Screen timewe activate the voice Daily usage time and choose the limits to set. From the same window we can choose screen time breaks, whether to activate sleep reminders and whether to receive weekly updates on screen time.

From the same window it is also possible to view how long we use the app, to realize our dependence on it.

4) Parental controls integrated into phones

In addition to the parental control settings on TikTok, it is worth using the parental controls present on Android and iPhonedefinitely more effective than those present in the app (they can easily coexist).

On Android phones it is worth installing Google Family Link and configure it with the Google accounts of the parents and children, as also seen in the guide above how to use Google Family Link.

On iPhone we can use Google Family Linkthe mode Usage time built-in or other dedicated parental controls, as seen in official iPhone guide.

Conclusions

TikTok should be used in moderation, especially if we are still minors. Concerned parents can put parental controls on TikTok using both the tools integrated within the app itself (good but not exceptional) and using the parental tools integrated on the phone (definitely more effective).
