Ransomware: the United Kingdom at risk of devastating attack

A new report from British parliamentary commission would have sensed a potentially devastating danger.

Il United KingdomIn fact, it could suffer a ransomware attack defined as “catastrophic” by the country’s government. The alarm comes from a report Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR), which highlighted some gaps potentially exploitable by cybercriminals.

One of the main reasons for this concern is related to government infrastructure, which is managed through outdated systems. Although the report recognizes the effort of National Cyber Security Center (NCSC) to improve the situation, to date Great Britain remains vulnerable.

Specifically, the document highlights how local authorities are poorly supported by the central government, revealing several cracks in their systems which can potentially prove lethal in the event of an attack.

In general, the report denounces how the situation is being underestimated, reporting some worrying data. In fact, in the event of a massive attack, according to experts, they foresee a potential loss equal to1.6% of GDP.

UK at risk of ransomware? The United Kingdom is the country most affected by cyber attacks after the USA and Ukraine

Reducing everything to the economic aspect, however, is reductive. For the OBR, in fact, democracy would also be at risk. Potential electoral interferencein such a fragile information system, would be anything but utopian.

On the other hand, the UK has recently already been the victim of an increase in cyber attacks over the past year. Just a few months ago, for example, there were several cases of ransomware attacks on major companies and brands in the British context (and beyond).

As it stands, Great Britain comes second United States e Ukraine the state most subject to cyber attacks. If part of these threats can be traced back to the Ukrainian conflict, there is no shortage of cases in which the motivations are purely economic.

In the land of Albion, as in other states, it is good to implement a policy of renewing digital protection. On the other hand, technology is now inextricably linked to politics and economics, offering many opportunities but with a series of risks that should never be underestimated.
