Record audio on Microsoft Teams and Google Meet

Tools and programs to record only the audio (without all the video) of a lesson, meeting or conference on Teams or Google Meet

Record meeting audio

Microsoft Teams and Google Meet are the most used programs for organizing remote meetings, meetings and lessons, also given their simplicity of configuration with very common accounts: in fact, a Microsoft account or a Google account is sufficient to be immediately operational.

These meeting platforms also allow you to record meetings or lessons, but these are mostly recording functions dedicated to video; what we propose to do is record only the audio of meetings, meetings or lessons on Teams or Meetconverting videos recorded with these platforms or using some simple computer tricks to capture the output audio, recording the entire session as we listen to it.

1) Integrated recording plus conversion

The simplest and most immediate method for record Teams and Meet audio plans to use the recording functions of both platforms, so as to record the entire video of the meeting or lesson and subsequently convert it with a conversion program or with VLC.

To record during the meeting, simply follow the instructions below:

  • Microsoft Teams: inside the meeting window, press on the three dots at the top right (Other actions) and press on Start recording.
  • Google Meet: inside the meeting window we press the button Activity and click on Registration; alternatively, press on the three dots icon at the bottom and select the item Registration.

After recording the video file we can convert it in various ways. A program that we can use to convert videos to MP3 files is the player VLCwhich also works very well as a universal video to audio file converter.

After downloading VLC on our PC, open it, press on at the top left Mediawe select Convert / Savewe press on addadd the video file recorded with Teams or Google Meet and press on at the bottom Convert / Save.

In the new window we select Convertedwe set the profile in the drop-down menu Audio – MP3choose the folder where to save the converted file at the bottom (by pressing on Browse) and finally click on Start to start the conversion. If we want to configure the audio of the converter, just press the button Edit the selected profile (shaped like a wrench) after selecting the profile for conversion to MP3.

2) Virtual audio driver and audio recording

If we are not interested in listening to what happens in the lesson or meeting but want to record everything (in old tape recorder style) we can use a audio driver as virtual outputthus enabling the recording of every sound made by Windows (and programs) in any recording software.

Before proceeding with the actual registration, we install the driver on the Windows PC VB-CABLE Virtual Audiodownloading the version suitable for the Microsoft operating system, given that the driver is also available for Mac.

After installing the virtual audio device on the PC, restart, start the meeting platform and change the audio output as shown below:

  • Microsoft Teams: we start a meeting on the platform, then press on the menu Otherwe click on Settings -> Device Settings and select, in the menu Speakerthe virtual audio driver CABLE Input.
  • Google Meet: also in this case we start a meeting, press down on the three dots, click on Settings and, in the section Audiolet’s make sure to set CABLE Input in the field Speakers.

The sound of the meeting will no longer be audible from the PC speakers or headphones, as we have diverted every sound of the meeting towards the virtual driver. Now all we have to do is open any audio recording program and proceed with the actual recording.

For the purpose we can use Audacity (free and open source) but also the Windows Sound Recorder (which we can search for in the Start menu), taking care to use the driver as a recording device or microphone CABLE Output.

On the same topic we can read our guides on how to record audio from the Internet, from your PC come on how to record with Audacity from PC, microphone or external.

3) Audio recording via OBS (recommended)

The best and recommended method to record audio only on Teams and Meet involves using the live recording program OBSdesigned for vloggers and Twitch content creators but can also be used for free to record the audio of any meeting.

To proceed we download and install the software Note Studio on our computer, open it from the Start menu, press on + button in the section Sourceswe select Capture audio outputwe press on OK twice and confirm where necessary.

Before starting the recording, press the button Mute next to the bar Audio del desktop (to avoid having to record a double output on the same file), we press on Start recording and we press on Yes to start the actual recording.

The advantage of this solution is that we can continue to hear the audio of the meeting from headphones, speakers or Bluetooth peripherals, without interference during recording. In conclusion we press on Finish recording to finalize the file. The recording will be in MKV format, so we will again have to convert the video file (even if it only contains audio) to a more convenient format for listening (for example MP3).

To convert with VLC we refer you to reading the first chapter of this guide or, alternatively, reading the guide above how to convert video with VLC on Windows PC.

Conclusions

The audio recordings of meetings, meetings and lessons on Teams and Meet can be done very easily using both the included recording functions and using OBS Studio. The latter lends itself very well to off-platform recordings, recording and allowing users to follow the meeting while recording the audio.
