1) Check proximity sensor operation

The first test that we can carry out is to verify the correct functioning of the proximity sensor from the secret test menu present in all Android smartphones.

To proceed, open the app Settingswe press on Phone info or similar and repeatedly press the key Kernel until the secret menu opens (CIT); inside the secret menu we press on Proximity sensor and try to bring your hand to the upper part of the earpiece, as if to simulate the ear during a call.

If the numeric value drops from 5.0 to 0.0 approaching the hand the proximity sensor is optical and therefore works well; if instead it remains 5.0 even bringing the hand closer we have a problem with the proximity sensor or we have a ultrasonic proximity sensorwhich only works during calls (and has a reputation for being very inaccurate).

2) Restart the proximity sensor

After doing the simple test seen in the previous chapter it’s time to start fix the problem of the screen not turning off during calls. The first method involves turning off the sensor completely and trying to make a call without it, and then turning it on again later.

To proceed we unlock the Developer Options on Androidwe open the new menu, press on Developer tiles for quick settings and activate the voice Deactivate sensors.

Before the call, open the Android quick menu and press on Deactivate sensors to deactivate the proximity sensor; as soon as we initiate the call, go immediately to the quick menu and switch off Deactivate sensorsso as to restart the proximity sensor correctly.

Unfortunately this option it is not available on all Android models: in this case we can try to solve it with a simple free app designed for the purpose.

3) Reset the proximity sensor

To brilliantly solve any problem with the proximity sensor and turn off the screen correctly during calls, we can rely on an app like Proximity Sensor Reset/Fixavailable free of charge.

This app allows you to calibrate the proximity sensor according to our needs, speeding up its activation when we bring the phone to our ear to call or to answer a call. To proceed, open the app, press the button Fix Itclose the proximity sensor (bringing the smartphone to your ear) and then press on Avanti (without removing the phone from your ear) as soon as we see the green signal.

We now remove the phone from our ear and confirm as soon as the signal turns green again. Now all we have to do is enable this handy app to run in the background a proximity sensor that works correctly during any type of callwithout worrying about pressing random keys.

4) Other useful tricks

If the phone is still having problems during calls we can try one of the following tricks to try to fix:

  • Use a different dialer: a dialer other than the basic one may offer less surface area and keys to press accidentally during calls, such as those seen in the user guide best dialer apps for android.
  • Restart your phone: we restart the phone at least once a week to restore the correct functioning of the proximity sensors.
  • Use Bluetooth headphones: if the problem cannot be solved due to hardware damage to the proximity sensor, we can consider purchasing commodes pocket bluetooth headphonesto be used during calls.
  • Reset your phone: as a last resort we can also try to reset the phone to its original settings, as seen in the guide on how format android and reset the phone erasing everything.

We follow all the advice before making the inevitable choice, that is swap phone for a brand new one no problems with the proximity sensor.

Conclusions

Due to an inaccurate or defective proximity sensor, many modern Android phones (including many Xiaomi and OnePlus) have problems during calls, presenting a screen that does not turn off both when we receive calls and when we make them ourselves.

Luckily we can apply some simple tricks to solve problems with proximity sensors of almost all phones on the market and manage calls precisely, without errors due to the involuntary touch of our cheek or ear.
