SPID becomes more European thanks to the Signicat aggregator: what it means

In the context of SPID (Public Digital Identity System), and international aggregator is a digital identity service provider that operates beyond the Europen borders. The international aggregator takes care of providing an interface between the SPID platform and the service offered by the aggregated subject, allowing users to access online services in a secure and reliable way.

Il eIDAS regulation provides that the electronic identification systems of the Member States of the European Union are interoperable, so that citizens can use their digital identity to access online services in other countries, other than that of their habitual residence.

SPID is a system of digital identification which allows citizens to access the online services of the Public Administration and adhering private individuals through a single pair of credentials (username and password). Europe is currently working on the Digital Identity Wallet o EUDI Wallet, a virtual wallet that will securely store a large number of documents attributable to each individual. As we have highlighted, it is up to each Member State to choose one or more mechanisms proof of identity to unlock access to Wallet. Once again, therefore, SPID could be the protagonist even if the current Government seems to want to focus on CIE (even if the digital identities SPIDs provided at the end of August 2023 were almost 36 million in Europe).

The international aggregator Signicat opens to SPID
