The discovery that WhatsApp is working on a function that, if implemented, would allow you to modify the messages already sent, without having to delete them, arrives like a bolt from the blue.

To date, among the social platforms, the function that allows you to edit a content even after it has been published is very widespread: even Twitter, which for a long time has been opposed to the Edit button, has put itself to work on this function, which could debut for Blue subscribers. Among the messaging apps, however, the message editing function is not very widespread, with the exception of Telegram which introduced it back in 2016.

In the past few hours, it emerged that something similar could also land in the green WhatsApp messaging note, which actually had already experienced it on Android many years ago, as ascertained with the 2.17.26 beta of 2017, only to then abandon it. The leakers of WABetaInfo, who have put their hands on an experimental version of the chat app for Android, gave the news of what would be a welcome return, although the function in question is in development even for the iOS and Desktop versions. of the Menlo Park platform.

According to what has been discovered, if the editing function of messages sent in chat is implemented, to use it it would be enough to hold down on a message until the icon of the three overlapping dots appears at the top: at that point, through this shortcut (⋮) a menu would be accessed which, in addition to the items relating to information and the copy of the message, would also offer the “Edit” option.

To date, it has not been possible to ascertain the contents of the Edit message function window, nor is it clear whether the modification of the message will be notified in any way in chat and how far it will be possible to proceed with the modification (for comparison, the cancellation of messages can be occur within an hour): the leakers, however, seem to be of the opinion that, barring possible future changes, there should be no way to check the previous versions of the modified messages, since the related modification history is missing.

The evolving nature of the function for editing messages sent in WhatsApp chats also makes it difficult for the moment to hazard a release timing for a function that, as mentioned, had already been introduced in the past, only to be withdrawn after a few days. implementation.
