Facebook, the well-known social network in blue, has in recent times been involved in controversies regarding the recently severely tested right to abortion, at the federal level, in the United States.

A few days ago, the American Supreme Court overturned a court ruling in the USA, substantially prohibiting at the federal level the right to abortion which, however, every single American state can, if desired, preserve. As a consequence of this provision, some curious incidents involving the Meta group have been reported. First of all, according to The Markup, which cited a survey conducted jointly by the Center for Investigative Reporting and Reveal, on approximately 2,500, as many as 2.94 pregnancy assistance centers would have shared with Meta information on users who visit them, such as research on pregnancy tests, contraceptives, and any propensity for abortion.

Meta, intervened on the matter, explained that the sensitive data of users are automatically filtered by its systems, which violates the rules of the company and its tools to share information of this kind, although it is not clear whether the data in question received has been never used in any way, for example for some profiling activity.

Again the issue of the right to abortion, proved to be hot, for Meta, with several users who reported something that was also confirmed by the tests conducted by the editors of Vice, Associated Press and NBC News, according to which several posts where users proposed to helping abortion by mailing “abortion pills” were removed within moments of their publication, leading in some cases to a 24-hour suspension of the sending account.

In this case Meta, while specifying that there have been some episodes of errors in the relative application (also on Instagram, with the application of the shield for sensitive content), explained that there has been no change on its policy regarding the services. or restricted goods. Specifically, it is forbidden to publish content about the transactions (sale, exchange, purchase) of prescription drugs, unless they come from “legitimate health e-commerce businesses offering delivery“.
