Google Chrome in desktop mode for all high-end Android tablets

2023 is coming to an end and like every end of every year, it’s time to take stock. In reality there is no better opportunity to talk about the work of Android on the world of tablet, which certainly have not received the same treatment as smartphones. For years, in fact, these devices have not benefited from the right attention from Google in order to be able to compete with other companies such as the iPad or with the world of telephones in general.

Approaching 2024, now imminent, it seems that Google has a new move ready that will finally set the tablet sector on fire.

Google Chrome will be in desktop mode by default on premium Android tablets

In a new post, recently published on the site’s blog Chrome for DevelopersGoogle has announced that it will enable the desktop mode as a setting default on premium tablets. By “premium” we mean all those devices that are equipped with a display of at least 10 inches and an amount of RAM equal to at least 8 GB.

Google explains this change by saying that websites would typically display differently on mobile devices and desktop, all based on the browser’s User-Agent string.

The experience on tablets, given the default setting that Chrome used for Android, was not optimal, as desktop websites were forced to adapt to 980 px. In terms of reading, the situation was comfortable, at least on small screens, but the higher performing tablets certainly didn’t benefit.

Furthermore, everything seems to arrive at a time when the Android tablet market has seen a decisive surge in terms of high-end devices. Exactly, these are precisely those premium tablets that Google talks about in its post. That said, websites will automatically use their desktop versions on these templates, giving users the chance to exploit their full potential.
