How to check the radiation emitted by your phone

Are we afraid that our phone emits too much harmful radiation? Let’s see how to find out how much radiation any phone emits

Calculation of telephone radiation

Phones emit a fair percentage of electromagnetic radiation every time we answer a call or talk on the cell phone. Neglecting the electromagnetic waves emitted by Wi-Fi and Bluetooth (present but very weak compared to the cellular network signal), we can say with certainty that all phones on the market are safe and testedbut they still have different radiation levels (expressed with the SAR value).

Without going into complex discussions that I don’t have the right expertise on, it’s actually very simple check the radiation emitted by the smartphone, be it an Android phone or an iPhone. In addition to the guided procedures we will show you how to find information online about the SAR issued by your phone.

1) Check radiation value via quick code

The first quick and practical method to check the radiation emitted by our phone involves opening the Phone Call or Dialer app (where we type the numbers to call) and typing the following code:

*#07#

This will open the settings screen Legal and regulatory notes or of Legal informationwhere manufacturers are required to specify the SAR value of the smartphone.

After opening this screen, press on Exposure to RF (are iPhone) o are Information about radio frequency exposure (on Android), scroll through the document that will open and press on link present within the body of the messageso as to be able to obtain the SAR values as recorded by the manufacturer at the time of certification of the device.

On some Android phones (such as the Xiaomi) there may also be several different codes: for our purpose we will have to open the link associated with the Rest of the World (RoW).

Check radiation value from Settings

In addition to the quick launch code we can access the screens Exposure to RF (are iPhone) o are Information about radio frequency exposure (on Android) also from the Settings app, without typing any code (since the code doesn’t work on some phones).

To proceed on Android we open the app Settingswe press on Info on the phone (or similar menu), let’s press on Detailed information and specifications (if present), press on Legal informationwe select Information about radio frequency exposure and finally click on the link on the page.

On iPhone, however, all we have to do is open the app Settings and take us on the journey General -> Legal and regulatory notes and press on the voice Exposure to RF.

2) Check radiation value online

In addition to telephones we can also use online sources to obtain the SAR values that each manufacturer had to communicate for their phones; certification is necessary for sales in Europe and the United States, so we will always find some information about it.

If we want to obtain the SAR values of our phone from the manufacturer’s website, below we have collected the link to RF declarations for today’s major smartphone manufacturers:

  • Apple
  • Samsung
  • Xiaomi

Alternatively we can obtain information on the radiation emitted using the site FCC ID Searchwhere we can enter the FFC ID code present in the phone information or in the user manual.

Nothing stops you from use good old Google to immediately find the SAR value or RF certification of our mobile phone, perhaps using keywords like “SAR value [nome-telefono]” o RF Exposure [nome-telefono]”.

Conclusions

Whatever method is used to control the radiation emitted by your phone, you just need to know that, for human health, it is sufficient that the SAR value is less than 1.6 W/Kg to obtain sales certification.

Let’s remember that many phones have different SAR values for the body and the head (the part most exposed during calls) and that many modern phones have SAR values of 1 W/Kg or less a sign that there is more and more attention to this detail and we avoid using SAR values close to the limit (even if in this case it is associated with better reception of the cellular network signal).

If we are worried about the SAR values of our phone we avoid traditional calls as much as possible and use the free Internet callsusing apps such as WhatsApp and Telegram for this purpose under a Wi-Fi network.
