iOS 16.6: Release Candidate Available, Public Distribution Imminent?

About a week ago Apple released iOS 17 in Europe in its first public beta, giving a preview of the new operating system to iPhone owners in Europe. With so many features on the way, it is undoubtedly an update particularly awaited by Apple fans. In the meantime, however, the latter will have to settle for intermediate updates. In this regard, in these hours from Cupertino the Release Candidate di iOS 16.6 and other proprietary operating systems, i.e. iPadOS 16.6, macOS Ventura 13.5, watchOS 9.6 and tvOS 16.6.

What are Release Candidates? As the name suggests, this is the presumably final version of a stable “release candidate” update for all users. As a rule, the RC version of iOS 16.6 can be downloaded in Over The Air (OTA) mode through the system settings, by visiting the sections “Software Update” and then “Beta Updates”. Here it will be necessary to choose the Developer Beta, or Public Beta, moving to a different version of the operating system.

It is necessary to keep in mind, however, that the update must be downloaded at your own risk, as any beta could include technical problems ready to compromise the OS. That said, the Release Candidate builds are as follows:

  • iOS 16.6: build 20G75
  • iPadOS 16.6: build 20G75
  • macOS 13.5: build 22G74
  • watchOS 9.6: build 20U73
  • tvOS 16.6: build 20M73

What’s new? Nothing really important: these are “minor updates” that improve performance and fix bugs, making iOS more secure. Meanwhile, Apple has also prepared Release Candidates for iOS and iPadOS 15.7.8, macOS Big Sur 11.7.9 and macOS Monterey 12.6.8, with security fixes and particularly serious bug fixes.
