About a year ago, WhatsApp allowed iPhone owners to switch to an Android device without losing their WhatsApp chats. Now, after the sightings at the beginning of the year, it is also starting to become possible to do the reverse, according to what was officially announced by the CEO of Meta, Mark Zuckerberg, who presented the novelty as a “most requested function”.

To take advantage of the novelty, in progressive roll-out for WhatsApp beta testers, with all users involved in the following weeks, all you need is a source device with Android Lollipop, Android 5 or later, or SDK 21 or later, on which it is installed at least WhatsApp 2.22.7.74, and a new iPhone (or reset to factory settings) with iOS 15.5, on which at least WhatsApp 2.22.10.70 is installed.

At this point, keeping both devices connected to the power supply, you can start the Switch to iOS app on the Android device and insert the code revealed by the iPhone: going forward, the WhatsApp data to be transferred will be prepared, including profile picture, media files, chat histories, individual and group chats (but not display name, peer-to-peer payment messages or call history).

After going ahead and transferring the data, WhatsApp will be downloaded from the iOS App Store, which will be started to log in with the same phone number used on the old device for the WhatsApp account: when requested, the completion process which, when finished, will cause the chats to appear on the iPhone. On the latter, the data will be transferred to the cloud only when backed up to iCloud, confirming that the whole process will be safe – WhatsApp will not know the data transferred – since to complete it you will use a Wi-Fi connection. -Fi Direct (for which it will be necessary that the source and source devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network).

A small sore point derives from the fact that, if there is already a chat history on WhatsApp for iOS, the latter will not be updated but rather overwritten by the one arriving from Android: on the other hand, having an Android phone to be disposed of in the procedure completed, it can be delivered for free in an Apple Store.
